About AUY
The American University of Yangon (AUY) is the only university in Myanmar that stands as a gateway to an American bachelor’s degree for Myanmar students. Through our 2+2 program, we offer our students a direct path to meaningful education. Students begin their journey in Yangon and complete their studies at one of our 17 partner universities across the United States. With 60 credits of general education courses earned in Yangon, they spend their final two years in the U.S., taking courses towards a preferred bachelor’s degree. Every year approximately 20 to 30 students receive student visas to continue their education to our partner universities. This unique opportunity opens doors to global exposure and life-changing experiences. While there, they continue to pursue further studies and practical experience through internships and they become a part of an empowered diaspora that engages in meaningful efforts to give back to their homeland. Ultimately, it equips them with tremendous knowledge and skills to contribute in their communities when they return home.

By exposing Myanmar students to quality education and cultural exchange, we instill in them the values of cultural diversity, inclusion, social harmony, and progress. Every student who walks through our doors represents a potential leader who understands the importance of tolerance, collaboration, and forward-thinking solutions to the challenges.
Barriers to Higher Education for Youth in Myanmar
In Myanmar, the dream of higher education, especially one with international reach, remains an unattainable dream for the majority of young people. The nation’s youth face obstacles that are unimaginable in many parts of the world. Ongoing conflict, natural disasters, and growing economic instability have made normal life and education a rare commodity. For countless bright and motivated students, the path to success is blocked by physical and emotional security, and financial barriers. And for those from displaced and marginalized communities, these barriers can feel insurmountable. The cost of tuition, books, and basic living expenses shuts the door on their dreams long before they can even begin to pursue them.
